Who is this course for?

An Extended Diploma in health and social care is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work place situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills that you need to start a career. The programme is designed to be equally accessible and relevant for learners aged 16-19 year of age or mature learners with or without experience.

What will I study?

The programme includes a range of core and specialist units designed to provide the knowledge and skills required for working in Health and Social Care settings. You will also complete the Level 3 Advanced Baccalaureate Diploma alongside the Level 3 Extended Diploma in HSC. You will also do Emergency Aid and Food Safety in Catering.
 

Entry Requirements

Previous knowledge required

You will need a minimum of four GCSE’s grade C or equivalent. GCSE English, Welsh Language, Maths and Science are desirable but not essential. You will also need to complete a satisfactory interview, provide suitable reference and demonstrate a strong commitment to succeed. You will also need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check prior to beginning your placement.


Five Cs or above at GCSE level normally to include English and Maths (Science would be advantageous)

or

Four Cs or above at GCSE level to include either GCSE Maths or English and BTEC Level 2 Diploma HSC at Merit or Distinction Grade plus a personal interview.

Career Prospects

Learners can achieve the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in HSC (Health Studies) which is equivalent to 3 A- levels. You can also achieve a variety of subsidiary awards plus the Welsh Baccalaureate at level 3 which is equivalent to 1 A- level.

As this course is equivalent to 4 A –levels you can decide whether to progress onto Higher Education or into Employment. Degree streams could include Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science and other Professional allied to Medicine or Social Work of both Adults and Children or Mental Health Nursing.
