In this full-time course, you will develop technical skills to produce and promote music, gain an understanding of roles within the music industry through projects and improve your theoretical knowledge of the subject. You will be taught throughout the course by a team of lectures who all work professionally within the music industry outside of college.  Embedded at the heart of the course will be opportunities to perform, both as an individual and within ensembles at the purpose built Nidum Arts Centre.

The three mandatory units you will study are

  • Working in the Music Industry
  • Professional Development in the Music Industry
  • Planning and Creating a Music Product.

 

In addition to this there are a number of units that can be tailored to your individual interests. These include:

  • Solo Musical Performance
  • Exploring Musical Composition
  • Producing a Music Recording
  • Improvisation
  • Rehearsal Techniques for Musicians
  • The Development of Music
  • Developing Music Theory
  • Investigating an Area of Music

 

Opportunities will also exist to join the vibrant extracurricular opportunities that the Music Academy offers. These include Orchestra, Function Band, Jazz Band, Vocal Group and concert tours to Europe.

Course Costs

Throughout the year there will be masterclasses, workshop sessions and guest lecturers with eminent industry professionals. The cost of this programme is £40.

 

About the music sector

From chart successes and download sales, to live performances and recording studios, the music industry is a global industry and the UK punches well above its weight. Sales of music, concerts, publishing and related revenue contributed £4.1 billion to the UK economy, with exports of £2.2 billion in 2015. Figures also show a year-on-year rise in employment since 2012, with a reported 119,020 jobs in the music industry in 2015.

Entry Requirements

2 GCSEs at grade C or above. Successful applicants will be selected via interview and audition.  The criterion will include being judged on their interest and experience in music plus an audition on an instrument or voice at around Grade 3 standard.

Career Prospects

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progess onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music.
