Childhood Studies

BSc (Hons) Childhood Studies Top up Degree

This programme will suit students wishing to develop a broad range of knowledge and skills relevant to working with children. This includes nurses, health visitors, early years educators, nursery workers in the public and independent sectors, social workers and people working in the youth justice and law enforcement sectors.

Modules include: the Growing Child, the Learning Child, the Child in Contemporary Society and a Dissertation.

Entry Requirements

Entry onto top up courses is through the successful completion of the HND or Foundation Degree (FD) in Childhood Studies with a pass profile.

If you hold a HND or FD in another subject area, entry onto the course is determined by the modules you have achieved.

This programme requires an enhanced DBS check, charged at an additional cost to the student.

You may be able to demonstrate or have certificated prior learning that can be legitimately used to establish a later entry point into the course or provide exemption from modules. If you believe this is the case please contact the Course leader as soon as possible to discuss a recognition of prior learning application.

Career Prospects

You may progress to a variety of postgraduate childcare related courses, including a PGCE Early Years/Primary Education.

Graduates have employment prospects in a wide range of childcare disciplines, for example: support workers, childcare managers, learning support workers and teaching assistants.

This programme is awarded by University of South Wales.


The programme will include lectures, seminars, fieldwork, workshop and tutorial sessions. You will usually have to complete written assignments and practical assessments as you progress through the academic year. A dissertation is required.

You are required to provide sufficient stationery for to support your teaching and learning. Printing charges are 0.02p per black and white A4 and 0.06p for a colour A4. On enrolment you are allocated 3.00 for printing costs on your student ID card. Additional credits can be purchased in the libraries

An additional cost for this programme is a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. You will need to complete a DBS application form and provide documents to prove your identity. Payment is required at or before enrolment.
