Introduction to Teaching

You will be introduced to the teaching practices that are required for successful performance in the Post-Compulsory Education Sector. It lays the foundations for subsequent work by providing an introduction to the factors that bring about successful learning. You will study two modules: Preparing to Teach and Learning & Applying Pedagogy.

Entry Requirements

A Level 3 qualification relevant to the subject specialism and GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Maths.

You may be able to demonstrate or have certificated prior learning that can be legitimately used to establish a later entry point into the course or provide exemption from modules. If you believe this is the case please contact the Course leader as soon as possible to discuss a recognition of prior learning application.

Career Prospects

You may progress to the Professional Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.

Graduates have employment prospects in further and adult education, for example: post 16 teaching assistant or study coach.

This programme is awarded by the University of South Wales.


The programme will include lectures, seminars, tutorial and practical workshops. Students will engage in peer teaching early on to gain experience and feedback. You will have to complete written assignments, practical assessments, reflective journals and a poster presentation as you progress through the programme. Your teaching will be assessed as part of the programme

You are required to provide sufficient stationery for to support your teaching and learning. Printing charges are 0.02p per black and white A4 and 0.06p for a colour A4. On enrolment you are allocated 3.00 for printing costs on your student ID card. Additional credits can be purchased in the libraries

An additional cost for this programme is a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. You will need to complete a DBS application form and provide documents to prove your identity. Payment is required at or before enrolment. This programme requires a teaching placement(s). They may incur travelling costs. The expectation is that students arrange the teaching placements themselves so any costs will depend on where you arrange to work. This may influence your decisions on the placements you choose.
