Young People’s Laureate Wales – Sophie Mckeand

ESOL students, at NPTC Group of Colleges Llandrindod Wells Campus played host to the ‘Young People’s Laureate Wales’ – Sophie Mckeand.

The ‘Young People’s Laureate’ initiative aims to inspire self-expression and increase literacy and communication skills in young people. It encourages reading, writing, conversation and communication within the young communities of Wales. Unique not just to Wales but to the UK as a whole, the Laureate works positively with teenagers and young people, particularly those from hard to reach and disadvantaged backgrounds. The Laureate’s task is to re-engage young people with reading and writing and by doing so, empower them with a sense of belonging.

Sophie’s bespoke workshop for our ESOL students was dynamic and engaging, and discussion topics throughout the morning ranged from quantum physics and Taoist philosophy to The Mabinogion and learning Welsh! Students composed short poems in English, in the present, past and future tenses and also read and presented poetry from their own countries, in their mother tongue. Sophie read two of her own poems; one from her current anthology, which was eagerly deconstructed, discussed and evaluated.

Students from all three ESOL classes (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) came together for the event and as a multi-linguistic level workshop, it was absolutely superb. Inclusive learning at its finest.

The students prepared an international buffet and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

A fantastic workshop – led by a very talented and inspirational poet – and a wonderful experience for all students involved.
