Sports students swap rugby training for basketball magic in Florida

Students from NPTC Group of Colleges, Level 3 Sports and Exercise Sciences Course at Brecon College, have landed back from a fun-packed 10-day trip to Florida.

The group were treated to an unforgettable sporting experience with the opportunity to see facilities for studying sports at the University of Florida, along with participation in training sessions and attending baseball and basketball matches, not to mention some sightseeing along the way.

Included in the trip was a visit to the University of Florida which ranks in the top 10 globally, according to the Center for World University Rankings list (April 2017).

Students were amazed at the vast size of the University and its extensive sporting facilities, stadiums and coaching methods. They shared their knowledge of traditional UK sports such as netball, football, hockey and rugby as well as sports’ development and fed back on cultural and technological differences. Equality in sport was discussed as well as advances in coaching such as holographic imaging on the pitch to use in training sessions.

The group of 18 students also witnessed some of America’s most celebrated sports which included trips to see basketball matches including Orlando Magic play Oklahoma City and baseball with Atlanta Braves against Baltimore Orioles.

The trip also included a visit to Golds Gym looking at employment opportunities and how business works in the USA. Parts of the trip were used for their Welsh Baccalaureate where they compared Wales, Europe and the world.

There was also some time to fit in the magic and thrills of Florida’s well-known amusement attractions including Universal Studios where students could round off a most memorable trip.

Chay Billen, Sports Lecturer at Brecon College who organised the trip along with colleague Rhian Davies, said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about different sports, training methods, careers and cultures. I know all of the students will remember this experience for many years to come. Several of the students had never been out of the country and this trip has opened new possibilities and ideas to them.”
