Perfect Weather and Paella

Budding chefs swapped the training kitchens of NPTC Group of Colleges for the sunny climes of Mallorca on the placement of a lifetime at the top Spanish restaurant, Son Quint.

Four Level 3 Professional Cookery students from Neath College worked at the fine dining restaurant at a golf resort in Son Vida near Palma, Mallorca alongside professional international chefs who gave them a fantastic experience in cooking typical Spanish and Mallorca cuisine.

The Erasmus+ exchange was organised through the Mallorca IES Calvià College and Coleg Cymru International. Erasmus+ is the European Union’s programme for education, training, youth and sport.

Erasmus+ aims to modernise education, training and youth work across Europe. It is open to education, training, youth and sport organisations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector. It offers exciting opportunities for UK participants to then study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad in Europe.

Paul Williams, Chef Lecturer at Neath College, was excited to be involved in the project and said:

”It’s fantastic for students to get involved in any project that allows experiencing culture and teaching from another country. Our Culinary arts students have been able to work alongside professional international chefs, getting valuable experience working in another country which is brilliant for their CVs and learning different cooking methods and techniques that they can use back home in their kitchens and restaurants.”

Carwyn Rees, Professional Cookery student said that working at Son Quint was a great experience!

“I have learned some dishes which I have never created before like guacamole, preparing and cooking squid, aioli, making different purees from carrot to watermelon and even prawn which was really fun.

“I also enjoyed speaking the odd word or two of Spanish to the chefs which was greatly received.”
